For those of you who know me this will be old stuff but for those of you who don't --- I'm DeeJae (Deb), wife of one great husband of 29 years, mother and home educator since the birth of my two daughters using an eclectic, some what unstructured and personalized adaption of the Principle Approach (FACE) in a "tutorial" fashion (I'm a Private Tutor to my daughters) year around. Our home education is more a way of life, thinking, being--parenting and tutoring all rolled up together--rather than a building, or place, or mere facts to cover. I'm also adopted mother to our cat, Perdita (named after Perdita in Shakespeare's Winter Tale) who thinks she is from a royal line. I've lived in the northern, flat cornfields of the Midwest all my life, in the heart of a downtown, old historical district with my dear mother, sister, and mother-in-law near by. They each have health problems and I see them often to help them out so we're all very close. I love all the family life, married life, mom stuff, home education, vintage collectibles books, and upcycled-restyled handmade arts.

Reading has always been a great pleasure of mine so it was a natural fit for me to read to the girls from the time they were only a few months old. I loved to hold them on my lap with a book in front of us and run my finger underneath the words as I read aloud. As they got older each would sit on one side of me while I held the book between us. Many precious hours were spent together, many books were read, some times so often we nearly had them memorized. Although it's not as routine since the girls are older, we still read together. Some thing I don't like to miss. From this our Seven Pillars Book Nook came to be -- a generational library to some day pass on to both my daughters. My oldest has even started her own collection -- the library continues to grow!

We don't have a specific room designated as a library so all our rooms have numerous books. They're everywhere, book shelves are filled with double rows out to the edge, they teeter and silently tower in stacks waiting their turn to travel in purses and bags or be read - they are treasures!

As a mom and a home educator I found many benefits to having our own family library of "Sustaining" books at home. The books in a family home library are easy to get to. There are no open-close hours so we can choose books to read any time of the day and read at own leisure without risking overdue fines. In some circumstances, we can even write in certain books or mark them when we want! We can keep books as clean as we like them and use them to decorate a room. One of the best benefits is that a family home library can be a "generational" library to pass on to children.

One of the ways we can have our family home library is by purchasing used and vintage books at reasonable prices. We shop at library sales, used book stores, thrift stores, and garage sales. While hunting for our own vintage treasures we often times find duplicates and other books we just can't pass up. My book-selling began some years ago and now more recently with my Seven Pillars Book Nook blog so that I can share them with other home educators and like minded families. This really does help fund our library!

Good questions to ask and think about when selecting books to read to your children: What is a good book? What makes a good story? What are "Sustaining-Enduring" books? That depends some what on what a person wants in a book or to get from a book. This varies for individuals and from family to family but there are some things to consider for finding a book to fit your individual and family tastes. A very famous bear, one of our favorite bears, helps with answering this question. In fact this is one of my favorite lines from Pooh and The Hundred Acre Woods -- Pooh had been eating a bit too much honey and got stuck in Rabbit's front door:

"....'A week!' said Pooh gloomily. 'What about meals?' . . . 'I'm afraid no meals,' said Christopher Robin because of getting thin quicker. But we will read to you.' Pooh began to sigh, and then found he couldn't because he was so tightly stuck; and a tear rolled down his eye, as he said: 'Then would you read a Sustaining Book, such as would help and comfort a Wedged Bear in Great Tightness?' So for a week Christopher Robin read that sort of book at the North end of Pooh...."

As Pooh said, "Sustaining" books are books that "help and comfort." How can a book be a "help and comfort" to a person or do such a thing? Are there different kinds of books that do more than others? Pooh thought so and so do I. What Pooh calls "Sustaining" books I also call "Enduring" books. "Sustaining-Enduring" books are the kind that tell us a story -- a story that touch us on multiple levels in the inner most core of our being. "Sustaining-Enduring" books and their story speak to the whole person of mind-heart-spirit-soul, to feed, inspire and nurture the intellectual-emotional life itself. Hidden within these stories are repeated questions every generation asks -- why do we have these minds?, why are we thinking-emotional-creative-worshiping beings?, why do we search out things and want to "know"?, why what is the meaning of life?, what is my part?, why is it that we aren't as good as we think we are or as bad as we could be? -- grand, enduring ideas echoed gently within the pages -- ideas that require hard work to struggle and wrestle with rather than memorizing answers.

"Sustaining-Enduring" books are written with significant descriptive language, not necessarily big words. They have a developed theme using both lovable and disgusting characters to create a vicarious experience to move the reader eagerly forward in their imagination to engage their mind-heart. These stories have a way of drawing the reader in from the beginning to take them to another place and time that can feel almost real, as if a participant in the story. They bring the reader to the end of the story with it being apart of them and changed forever, still wishing to be “there” or hungry for more. Their stories are remembered long after the cover is closed and are returned to for reading again and again. These are the books of information and ideas that feed the soul -- that shape thinking and character. "Sustaining-Enduring" books are engaging, inspiring, nurturing, and memorable -- lovely treasures -- a preference in our family.

A. A. Milne's Winnie-the-Pooh is one of those very "Sustaining-Enduring" books, one of our favorites and a sampling of the kind of books we own, enjoy and recommend. Here at my blog there will be a hodge podge of information about books and authors, quotes, poems, online literature, book reviews and lists of our favorite books.

Proverbs 9:1 Wisdom has built her house; she has hewn out its seven pillars.
The "Seven Pillars" has reference to Proverbs 9:1 in the Old Testament where "Wisdom" has built a special house, similar to a temple, to be used for a large get-together banquet or meal. This is a precursor of Christ's parable in the New Testament which explains what the Kingdom of God is like by comparing it to the wedding feast of a king. Summer Is Almost Here & I'm Close To Finishing My New Lists of Books

I've been in slow motion the past five months and I'm even slow yet this week but it is getting better. I was not planning on bursitis to settle in my knees but that is where I'm at. My garden has never looked worse as I haven't been able to get out and work in it or plant until this past week. I set out my tomato plants only this past weekend but the warm, humid weather will make them grow soon enough and they'll catch up. Little by little every thing is seeming a bit more routine and I'm gradually writing descriptions for new lists of books I have for sale. They'll be posted within a couple of weeks, hopefully by the end of June.

A Long, Dreary, Rough Winter Has Distracted Me From Many Things

My blog has moved and been re-designed. Finally, after a long delay due to scanner problems, today December 18, is the Grand Re-Opening! I will get back to you as soon as I can to let you know that I received your email order and with confirmation of availability and total owed. Please, do not pay for your order until I have checked the availability, figured the total owed and returned an email to you. I usually mark the books that are sold and no longer available as "Sold" and the titles marked with a strike through: "Sold" ~~The Book Title by author~~ -- I also will mark the books that have been committed to purchase as "Sale Pending" due to waiting for payment clearance but once in a while I might forget or not have time. Once you have received my confirmation of availability and total cost email, please, commit to your order by returning email to me with your full name, address, and how you'll be paying: paypal, money order or personal check.

I don't work on the computer or with book orders on Sunday, so if you send an email order during that time, you won't get an email from me until Monday or Tuesday afternoon. :-) During the week I try to answer email within 24 hours but sometimes the unexpected happens -- from time to time I have email or server problems. ADVANCE PAYMENT: needs to be received and cleared before shipping. I accept NON-CREDIT CARD, NON-DEBIT CARD, CASH ONLY Paypal payment, or a UNITED STATES POSTAL SERVICE money order and also personal checks with a 21 business day clearance time. Most Paypal orders are paid for within minutes, a couple of hours, or occasionally a day or two. Payment options of United States Postal Service money orders or personal checks will understandably take longer to reach me but they should reach me no later than 7-10 days from date of finalizing your order in our emails. After that, not hearing from buyer or not receiving payment, the books are considered for sale and available for some one else to purchase. No orders are sent out or mailed unless payment is received and cleared.

SHIPPING RATE: I ship by USPS Media rate which is typically slow and this can take any where from 9-21 days, with the possibility of taking as long as 21-42 days. Media rate is subject to opening for safety inspection by the USPS which can delay it. Weather can delay it also. Generally Media mail arrives sooner but the possibility for a long delivery time is there. The first book, a single book order (if only ordering only one book) is $5.75 shipping/handling/media rate postage which includes complimentary Signature Confirmation Tracking.

COMBINED SHIPPING/HANDLING/POSTAGE: is available for an ADDITIONAL cost to the book price. Used Second-Hand Vintage Collectible Books

Most of my books are *USED* second-hand books, *USED* second-hand VINTAGE collectibles, previously owned and read, unless stated "NEW" so there will be reasonable, normal wear which is to be expected of used books. Many are out-of-print, hard to find, and some times rare books. Many, but not all, will be library discard books with all the library markings of card pockets, stamps, bar codes, and labels. They are all really good books but they are *NOT* in perfect condition. Some are graded "Very Good" but they still are "USED" and WILL have normal wear -- they're simply better than "Good Condition." I try to keep the cost as low as possible so the condition description IS NOT A PAGE BY PAGE description. To do so with the amount of time involved would raise the dollar price of books. The descriptions are generalities by thumbing through the book. I grade books on overall quality, IE. the cover as well as the inside. Flaws are noted in my description.

ALLERGIES AND OLD BOOKS - I clean all the book covers myself but I have not personally owned these used items and books so I can't guarantee them to be allergen free. If you have allergies of any kind (dust, smoke, food, animal, plant) please, do not purchase any books from my lists, as I can't be responsible for allergic reactions to old, vintage items.

Grading Terms:

Fine (F) – looks new, no major flaws but possible light shelf wear, no writing or owner's name, never an ex-library discard.
Near Fine (NF) - A handsome copy, may have owners name inside, possible few, minor cosmetic defects, pages clean and bright, may not have dust jacket, never an ex-library discard.
Very Good (VG) – generally clean, tight, copy with slight wear, pages overall clean but may be a little dull, possible name inside, may not have dust jacket, may some times be an ex- library discard which will be noted.
Good (G) – good solid copy, slightly more wear, possible markings or nicks or bumps, small tears, minor smudges, fading, little fraying at spine extremities, a good spine with possible slight wobble which will be noted, pages may be discolored with age and have a few spots or smudges, may not have dust jacket, may be an ex-library discard which will be noted.

I grade major flaws by the "Reading Copy" description below but I am unable to inspect each and every page in great detail so not every little thing is described.. Your satisfaction is important so if you prefer books in "New" condition, MINT, never used, Near Fine condition, with not a spot or sign of wear, the most very attractive copies and collectible books, PLEASE, do not purchase any books with the "Reading Copy" description below. As a parent, if you don't mind more than the normal wear for holding/handling while you read to your children, these books may be what you want. The main thing is that *YOU* *ARE* pleased with your purchase, I would not want you disappointed. :-) These type of books below are not books a collector would normally want, they're for the parent who wants to have book in hand, a child on the lap, and other children gathered around to read a good story together. If not used by a mom or dad to read aloud to their children these "Reading Copy" books would be good for a person to learn book repair or use for altered mixed media arts. Borax Crystals & Snowflake Fun

If you don't have enough real snow you can always make your own. We made our own Borax Crystals during a winter that we had very little snow. Enjoy!

All of the created world around us teaches us, reflects God's image and reminds us of God's continual Providential care for His creation and us:

Psalm 8:3-4

"When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him?"

(requires adult help--See This Link: Note of Caution Using Borax)

What you'll need:
1. Wide mouth pint glass jar, deep enough to suspend "snowflake"
2. White pipe cleaners (wire or paper clips can also be used)
3. String
4. Blue food coloring (optional)
5. 20 Mule Team Borax Laundry Booster - NOT Boraxo Soap
6. Boiling water
7. Pencil or wooden stick

Directions:
Pipe Cleaner Shapes:
(Different shapes can be made: spirals, stars, triangles, hearts)

1. Cut pipe cleaners into 3 equal sections.

2. Twist together so you have a six-sided shape.

3. Tie a piece of string around the outer edge connecting all six points. The points can be trimmed to even to the same length. This will be the base for the crystals to grow on.

4. Attach another piece of string to one of the points and then to pencil or wooden stick. This will be for suspending the pipe cleaner shape in the borax water.

Boiling the water requires adult help)
1. Measure how many cups the jar will hold, then boil water.
2. Pour boiling water into jar and mix in 3 tablespoon borax per cup of water. If the jar holds 3 cups of water, use 9 tablespoons borax. Water must be boiling.
3. Stir until dissolved. Once the borax is dissolved, the water is saturated with borax and ready for the pipe cleaner shape. There may be a bit of powder settle on the bottom of the jar, which is ok.
4. If you wish, you may add a tiny bit of blue food coloring now to give the snowflake a bluish hue.
5. Suspend pipe cleaner shape into the jar so that the pencil is resting on the lip of the jar and the snowflake is freely suspended in the borax solution.
6. Wait overnight and do not move or disturb. In the morning the snowflake will be covered with shiny crystals.

These "snowflakes" can be long lasting and almost as sparkly as the real ones. Hang in a window as a sun-catcher or use as a winter time decoration. Some of our finished "snowflakes" below.

How do the Borax crystals grow?

Boiling water is used because hot water holds more Borax crystals than cold water. Heated water molecules move farther apart to make room for more Borax crystals to dissolve. When no more of the Borax can be dissolved, when it can hold no more, this is saturation. Cooling down causes the water molecules to move closer together again, leaving less room for the dissolved borax so the crystals can no longer stay suspended in the water, which causes crystals to form and grow on top of each other and on the pipe cleaner. Borax crystals have a flat side and symmetrical shape. There are other examples of crystals: salt, sugar, and Epsom salts. Salt crystals are always cube-shaped while snow crystals form a six-sided structure. Snowflakes form the same way. Cooling water makes the molecules move closer together as they attach to dust particles from the atmosphere. All water molecules (H2O) are shaped the same making a repeating pattern to form a six sided crystal.

Now, for the simple science.

All snowflakes are made up of water and dust particles. The wind carries tiny bits of dirt up into the atmosphere. As the temperature cools, water freezes onto a dust particles moving closer together forming what is called a ice crystal. Each crystal has a repeating pattern based on its unique shape. The ice crystals will then grow and build on top of other ice crystals to form a snowflake. The ice crystals are always a six-sided hexagonal shape -- this is what they have in common & this is how they are the same in basic shape and substance. BUT there are differences and variations due to many things that happen as the crystal is falling through the atmosphere. Temperature & humidity create the basic shape while speed of fall, partial thawing, colliding with water drops, colliding with other crystals cause variations of shapes making no two snowflakes a like yet snowflakes are always designed to be snowflakes and will never become something else. Similarities of basic shapes are grouped into 7 basic groups: 1. plate (flat), 2. stellar (star-shaped), 3. column, 4. needle, 5. spatial dendrite (lacy), 6. capped column and 7. irregular.

The word "crystal" comes from Greek krystallos meaning ice, crystal.

If you want to read a good book about a man who studied snowflakes be sure to read Snowflake Bentley by Jacqueline Briggs Martin, illustrated by Mary Azarian, a Caldecott Award Book. Wilson Bentley, a Vermont farmer, loved winter and studied snowflakes. He lived in the late 1800's and became known as "Snowflake Bentley." Most of his life was spent taking pictures of snowflakes. By using a microscope he was able to take more than 6,000 pictures of snowflakes in his life and found that no two snow crystals are alike.

A quote from Wilson Bentley:

"Under the microscope, I found that snowflakes were miracles of beauty; and it seemed a shame that this beauty should not be seen and appreciated by others. Every crystal was a masterpiece of design and no one design was ever repeated. When a snowflake melted, that design was forever lost. Just that much beauty was gone, without leaving any record behind."

Biblical Principles of Snowflakes

1. God creates and controls the weather/snow: Psalm 74:17 ". . . you have made summer and winter . . ." and Psalms 147:16 "He gives snow like wool; He scatters hoarfrost like ashes."

2. Snow serves His purpose, obeys His commands, as a part of nature and weather: Job 37:5-6 "God thunders wondrously with his voice; He does great things that we cannot comprehend. For to the snow he says, 'Fall on the earth,' likewise to the downpour, His mighty downpour."

3. Snow reflects the image of God, they reflect His nature, His creativity & beauty, diversity, grandeur, complexity, magnificence, majesty (they bring praise and glory to Him: Psalm 148:7-8 "Praise the LORD from the earth, you great sea creatures and all deeps, fire and hail, snow and mist, stormy wind fulfilling his word!")

4. God creates all snowflakes having common, basic substance, shape, and patterns; similarities yet with variety, diversity, uniqueness, individuality, none alike -- this reflects God's orderliness, immutability, infinity, uniqueness, and creativity.

5. Snow reminds us of God's continual Providential care for us and His creation: Psalm 8:3-4 "When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him?"

This helps us with the understanding of human INDIVIDUALITY.

Human beings:

1. are made in God's image, created and formed as a human and not coming from something else, they are thinking, feeling, creative, worshipping beings, human individuals are unique and diverse (although snowflakes aren't made in God's image they reflect God's creativity, pattern, orderliness, uniqueness, diversity, individuality, numbers: six-sided hexagon found in the constant and immutable character of God.)

2. are similar in common, basic, substance and shape -- all humans have intricate physical body and spirit-soul (snowflakes are basic substance and shape: frozen water and dust, intricate crystals in common.)

3. are unique and diverse, humans have variety of unique physical characteristics, talents, interests, even family resemblances and twins are unique (snowflakes have uniqueness and diversity, no two alike.)

4. have similarity of types/kinds - there are races and nationality (there are 7 different basic types/kinds of snowflakes.)

5. Christians are conformed and shaped to be like Christ by Holy Spirit and the Word (snowflakes are shaped and formed by temperature, moisture, speed of falling through the atmosphere, colliding with other crystals.)

(1) Snow is not uncommon in the winter in Jerusalem, but it never reaches any depth and in many winters it is not seen at all. It usually disappears, for the most part, as soon as the sun appears, though it may "hide itself" for a time in the gorge cut by a stream (Job 6:16). On lower levels than Jerusalem there is never sufficient to cover the ground, though often there are some flakes seen in the air. Even at sea-level there is occasionally a sufficient fall of hail to cover the ground. A very exceptional snowfall is related in 1 Macc 13:22 at Adora (near Hebron). It was heavy enough to prevent the movement of troops.

(2) The tops of the mountains of Lebanon are white with snow for most of the year, and snow may be found in large banks in the valleys and the northern slopes at any time in the summer. Mt. Hermon, 9,200 ft. high, has long streaks of snow in the valleys all the summer.

(3) The snow of the mountains is the source of the water of the springs which last throughout the drought of summer. In case the snow fails there is sure to be a lack of water in the fountains: "Shall the snow of Lebanon fail .... or shall the cold waters that flow down from afar be dried up?" (Jer 18:14).

Snow is a symbol of purity and being clean as found in Psalm 51:7 "Wash me and I shall be whiter than snow." and in Isaiah 1:18 "Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow." Figuratively in Job 9:30 "If I wash myself with snow-water." it represents cleansing. A most common use is for representing whiteness of color and purity as it relates to Christ: Daniel 7:9 "As I looked, thrones were set in place, and the Ancient of Days took his seat. His clothing was as white as snow; the hair of his head was white like wool...", Matthew 28:3 "His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow.", Mark 9:3 "and his clothes became radiant, intensely white, as no one on earth could bleach them.", and Revelation 1:14 "The hairs of his head were white, like white wool, like snow. His eyes were like a flame of fire..."

"There is a strange idea abroad that in every subject the ancient books should be read only by the professionals, and that the amateur should content himself with the modern books. Thus I have found as a tutor in English Literature that if the average student wants to find out something about Platonism, the very last thing he thinks of doing is to take a translation of Plato off the library shelf and read the Symposium. He would rather read some dreary modern book ten times as long, all about "isms" and influences and only once in twelve pages telling him what Plato actually said. The error is rather an amiable one, for it springs from humility. The student is half afraid to meet one of the great philosophers face to face. He feels himself inadequate and thinks he will not understand him. But if he only knew, the great man, just because of his greatness, is much more intelligible than his modern commentator. The simplest student will be able to understand, if not all, yet a very great deal of what Plato said; but hardly anyone can understand some modern books on Platonism. It has always therefore been one of my main endeavours as a teacher to persuade the young that firsthand knowledge is not only more worth acquiring than secondhand knowledge, but is usually much easier and more delightful to acquire.

This mistaken preference for the modern books and this shyness of the old ones is nowhere more rampant than in theology. Wherever you find a little study circle of Christian laity you can be almost certain that they are studying not St. Luke or St. Paul or St. Augustine or Thomas Aquinas or Hooker or Butler, but M. Berdyaev or M. Maritain or M. Niebuhr or Miss Sayers or even myself.

Now this seems to me topsy-turvy. Naturally, since I myself am a writer, I do not wish the ordinary reader to read no modern books. But if he must read only the new or only the old, I would advise him to read the old. And I would give him this advice precisely because he is an amateur and therefore much less protected than the expert against the dangers of an exclusive contemporary diet. A new book is still on its trial and the amateur is not in a position to judge it. It has to be tested against the great body of Christian thought down the ages, and all its hidden implications (often unsuspected by the author himself) have to be brought to light. Often it cannot be fully understood without the knowledge of a good many other modern books. If you join at eleven o'clock a conversation which began at eight you will often not see the real bearing of what is said. Remarks which seem to you very ordinary will produce laughter or irritation and you will not see why—the reason, of course, being that the earlier stages of the conversation have given them a special point. In the same way sentences in a modern book which look quite ordinary may be directed at some other book; in this way you may be led to accept what you would have indignantly rejected if you knew its real significance. The only safety is to have a standard of plain, central Christianity ("mere Christianity" as Baxter called it) which puts the controversies of the moment in their proper perspective. Such a standard can be acquired only from the old books. It is a good rule, after reading a new book, never to allow yourself another new one till you have read an old one in between. All contemporary writers share to some extent the contemporary outlook—even those, like myself, who seem most opposed to it. Nothing strikes me more when I read the controversies of past ages than the fact that both sides were usually assuming without question a good deal which we should now absolutely deny. They thought that they were as completely opposed as two sides could be, but in fact they were all the time secretly united -- united with each other and against earlier and later ages -- by a great mass of common assumptions. We may be sure that the characteristic blindness of the twentieth century -- the blindness about which posterity will ask, "But how could they have thought that?" -- lies where we have never suspected it, and concerns something about which there is untroubled agreement between Hitler and President Roosevelt or between Mr. H. G. Wells and Karl Barth. None of us can fully escape this blindness, but we shall certainly increase it, and weaken our guard against it, if we read only modern books. Where they are true they will give us truths which we half knew already. Where they are false they will aggravate the error with which we are already dangerously ill. The only palliative is to keep the clean sea breeze of the centuries blowing through our minds, and this can be done only by reading old books. Not, of course, that there is any magic about the past. People were no cleverer then than they are now; they made as many mistakes as we. But not the same mistakes. They will not flatter us in the errors we are already committing; and their own errors, being now open and palpable, will not endanger us. Two heads are better than one, not because either is infallible, but because they are unlikely to go wrong in the same direction. To be sure, the books of the future would be just as good a corrective as the books of the past, but unfortunately we cannot get at them. . ."

Reading Copy - This copy is not something a collector would normally want, it's more for the parent who wants to have book in hand, a child on the lap, and other children gathered around to read a good story together – this book most often but not always is an ex-library discard, IS NOT examined page by page, there will be MORE THAN THE USUAL - VERY obvious major flaws, may or may not have dust jacket, if there is a dust jacket there's possible chipping or open tears/missing pieces or repaired tears, the book itself may have weak, loose, split or wobbly spine/hinge, pages have become very yellow with age and may have major stained or loose, messy pages with smudges, creases, folds, have some writing, open tears/missing pieces, repaired tears--a lot of tape, etc., but generally intact, not pretty at all but solid enough copy for the parent to read to their children -- AND, if not used by a mom or dad to read to their children this kind of book would be good for the resourceful, creative person to learn how to repair and recover books or use for altered mixed media arts.
